Questions about the Oregon Trail unit study
What ages and grades is the Oregon Trail unit study for?
It’s designed for ages 6–10 and grades 2–5. The study combines guided history lessons, reading, writing, math decisions, and hands-on experiences.
How long does the unit take?
The eight-week plan includes 24 guided sessions, with three sessions each week. You can leave space between sessions for read-alouds, field trips, or catching up.
Is this a printable game or a complete history unit?
Both. The six connected game boards, 40 event cards, ledger, Trail Log, and family journal form a simulation within a 127-page history unit. The unit also includes lessons and more than 15 hands-on experiences.
What do I need to print?
This is a digital PDF download. The six game-board sections and separate pictorial route map are sized at 11 x 17 inches. Plan for access to a printer that supports that size or a print shop. Nothing physical is shipped.
Are books and activity supplies included?
No. Suggested books are purchased separately, and you provide the materials for the hands-on activities. The purchase includes the printable lessons and learner materials.
Does the unit include Native perspectives?
The unit names Native nations along the route, asks learners whose perspectives historical records leave out, and addresses harm caused by westward expansion. Week 8 also covers Oregon’s exclusion laws.
